Your buildings are full of data – but can you see what’s happening?

By Guil, 3D and Digital Twin Lead at SmartViz

I’ve spent 20 years bringing virtual worlds to life through 3D simulation. At SmartViz, my job is turning complex building data into visualisations that help clients make better decisions, faster.

That last part is important because the real challenge isn’t collecting data. Most organisations have plenty of it. The challenge is understanding which spaces are working, which aren’t – and why.

This is one of the key challenges our tech is here to solve.

How our tech is different

For us, creating more efficient spaces is about more than smart lighting and automated HVAC. It’s about understanding people and how they use your buildings.

That’s why our technology is different. We combine AI-powered analytics with human behaviour modelling to create live, 3D models of your buildings. So, you can visualise exactly how people are using them.

You can identify rooms that look busy on paper but sit empty. You can overlay occupancy patterns against energy consumption to spot where you’re heating empty spaces. And you can benchmark performance against your KPIs.

But we don’t just stop there. We’ve built in what-if scenario testing too. This means you can stress-test changes before you make them – and see the impact on energy use, cost and user experience.

Implement our tech without the hassle

All of this might sound complex to set up. But that’s another way our technology differs too.

We’re here to make your life easier, not bring a new layer of hassle. So, whether you’re managing a single building, a university or a global portfolio like Vodafone’s 3,000+ properties, our tech connects seamlessly with your existing systems and grows with you.

Three new updates to our platform

Of course, technology changes and so do our clients’ challenges. We know that facilities managers are facing complex challenges right now. A recentIWFM report highlighted shifting regulations, budget constraints and a growing need for sustainable solutions. While the built environment still accounts fornearly 40% of global carbon emissions.

This is why we’re constantly refining SmartViz to meet more of our clients’ needs.

Here are three updates we’ve made in the last two months:

1. New space insights in digital twin mode. Now you can manage your space and see detailed insights, including utilisation and environmental rates over time.

2. User management upgrade. To give you greater control and insights, you can now assign user roles and define access permissions at a granular level. This includes specific buildings, spaces and space types.

3. Export a custom data range. Choose a custom data range to easily analyse historical insights. This update has also improved data, reports and space information for smoother sharing and offline analysis.

How our tech translated into real results for Barnsley Council

We love building new features but what really matters is the impact for our clients. Take Barnsley Council, for example.

They came to us with a familiar challenge –  underused offices, wasted energy and rising costs. So, we deployed IoT sensors, occupancy analytics and environmental monitoring to create a digital twin of their Council buildings.

The insights they received created a prospective 10-15% reduction in facilities costs through optimised space usage. And an estimated 10% decrease in energy consumption.

As David Robinson, Service Director at Barnsley Council, put it: “The system was up and running in a matter of days, providing instant access to valuable insights. Their digital twin technology makes it easy to visualise our estate and drive data-led decisions.”

We’d love to help you too

Results like these are the reason we keep refining SmartViz. The updates we’ve shared might seem small, but they’re part of our bigger goal to help clients better understand occupancy.

Every improvement we make is designed to help you see your buildings more clearly, act on insights more quickly – and create spaces that work better for people and planet.
